DEVOTIONAL: Who Told You Who You Were?

📖 Scripture Focus

  • Psalm 139:14“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
  • Proverbs 22:6“Train up a child in the way he should go…”
  • Romans 12:2“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
  • 1 Peter 2:9“You are a chosen people…”

💭 Devotional

Before we ever knew who we were, someone was already telling us.

As children, our identity is shaped in the earliest places we call home.
Through words, actions, discipline, absence, affection—or the lack of it—
we begin to form beliefs about ourselves.

If we were affirmed, we may have learned:
I am loved.
I matter.

But if we were neglected, criticized, or overlooked, we may have quietly believed:
I’m not enough.
I have to earn love.
Something is wrong with me.

And the truth is… we didn’t question those beliefs.
We became them.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us that what is planted early takes root.
Not just behavior—but identity.

So many of us have been living from identities that were formed in childhood,
but never confirmed by God.

The Shift

At some point, we have to ask:

“Who told me who I was?”
…and more importantly…
“Does that align with what God says about me?”

Because God’s truth is clear:

  • You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)
  • You are chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
  • You are loved with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3)

That means:
Anything that contradicts that was learned, not given by God.

Healing Your Identity

Romans 12:2 tells us we are transformed by the renewing of our mind.

That means:
You don’t have to stay who you were taught to be.

You can unlearn:

“I’m not enough”

“I have to prove my worth”

“I’m unlovable”

…and replace it with truth:

 I am chosen.
I am set apart.
I am deeply loved by God.

Reflection

What did I learn about myself growing up?

Who or what shaped that belief?

Does that align with what God says about me?

Closing Prayer

Abba Father,
Show me the places where my identity was shaped by people instead of You.
Reveal every belief that does not align with Your truth.
Help me release what I was taught
and receive who You say I am.
Remind me daily that I am chosen, loved, and set apart.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
